The Poetry Room began in 2017 with a simple idea: create a space where people could show up, share their stories, and feel heard.

At the time, Lansing had talented poets but few consistent spaces for spoken word. What started as small gatherings and open mics quickly grew into a community. People came not just to perform, but to listen—to connect through language, laughter, vulnerability, and truth.

As the audience grew, so did the vision.

In 2021, The Poetry Room officially became a nonprofit organization, expanding its ability to support artists, host larger events, and partner with local institutions. Today, The Poetry Room produces poetry slams, open mics, featured readings, youth events, and community workshops across the Lansing area.

Our events bring together emerging writers, seasoned performers, students, and first-time poets who may have never shared their voice on a stage before.

At its core, The Poetry Room believes poetry is not just an art form—it is a way of building community.

A poem can be a confession, a protest, a love letter, or a moment of laughter shared with strangers who quickly become friends. By creating welcoming spaces for storytelling and performance, we help ensure that poetry remains a living, breathing part of Lansing’s cultural life.
